One of the biggest mistakes that writers make is trying to emulate someone else’s style instead of focusing on their own.
Sure, you may admire another writer’s work, but if you try to write like them, you’ll only end up with a pale imitation.
I have read countless romcoms. I’ve moved from being inspired, to feeling intimidated.
There was always a voice in my head saying ‘your writing isn’t nearly as good as hers’.
I still have the occasional voice saying that I’m not good enough or that I won’t be successful because my story is nothing like his or hers.
So, here are a few things I keep in mind when I’m writing, and to make sure that I stick to my style, and most importantly: own it!
Embrace your quirks: Every writer has their unique quirks and tics. Embrace them! Your quirks are what make your writing stand out and help to establish your voice.
Write for yourself: Write for yourself, not for anyone else. Write what you want to write, not what you think someone else wants to read.
Don’t compare yourself to others: Comparing yourself to other writers will only lead to frustration and disappointment. Focus on your writing and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing.
Be authentic: Be yourself, not a copy of someone else. Your writing should reflect your personality, experiences, and perspectives.
Experiment: Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things. Find your style by trying new techniques, structures, and styles.
Sticking to your style of writing is crucial when crafting romantic comedies. Embrace your quirks, write for yourself, don’t compare yourself to others, be authentic, and experiment to find your voice.
And most importantly, have fun!
Happy writing!
